Multidisciplinary research institute supports sustainable industries and jobs for future generations
The Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) is a highly successful precinct at the University of Newcastle, acting as a focal point for industry, academia and government collaboration.
The multidisciplinary research institute has a focus on supporting the energy, resources, food and water sectors, boasting testbed and pilot plant facilities which have hosted industry collaborations across areas of national significance, including critical resource sustainability, and the transformation of the energy system.
The Institute's large base of national and international partners is set to grow with current research priorities focused on:
- industrial innovation to unlock sector potential with a new generation of materials, processes, technologies, and services
- productivity and efficiency to optimise the use of critical resources and enhance processes to reduce waste
- technologies and utilisation to transfer the latest technologies into sectors of significance for sustainability and competitive advantage
- sustainability and security to meet the environmental, social and economic priorities for stronger, more resilient regions.
Professor Alan Broadfoot, Executive Director at NIER says:
“Our regions drive the state’s economic productivity, and supporting the regions to diversify and adapt to new opportunities is a major focus at NIER. Through research and industry partnerships, we can help regional NSW tap into its potential as a leader in processing the critical minerals needed for renewable and low-carbon technologies, creating productive, competitive, and sustainable industries and jobs for future generations.”
