The Australian Government, in collaboration with Boeing Defence Australia, has announced a significant $569 million contract to enhance and maintain the Royal Australian Air Force’s E-7A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft. This investment, revealed on 7 March 2025, is set to have a profound impact on the Hunter region in NSW.
The E-7A Wedgetail is a critical component of Australia's air and missile defence capability. The funding will upgrade the aircraft and ground systems, ensuring the Wedgetail remains at the forefront of surveillance technology.
The government is not only bolstering national security, but also contributing to the economic stability of the Hunter region, with this contract securing the future of 170 jobs, in addition to 360 existing personnel at RAAF Base Williamtown.
